Christy (pseudonym), 12 years old this year, was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 10. A little over a year later, the curvature increased to 71 degrees, requiring immediate surgical correction. Fortunately, she was still in her developmental stage, and thanks to a treatment plan from Germany, her curvature was reduced from 71 degrees to 43 degrees in just six weeks! Chiropractor Dr Cheung Yuen-kwan stated: “Currently, the scoliosis correction methods introduced from Europe have very ideal corrective effects, but parents must be careful to address it during their child’s developmental period. Delaying treatment means missing this golden opportunity.”

Christy’s family hadn’t paid attention to her scoliosis until she was 10 years old, when a school physical examination revealed that her scoliosis had reached 29 degrees. The hospital immediately arranged for Christy to wear a Boston brace for 23 hours a day. However, Christy , being young and naive, was unaware of the potential consequences of scoliosis. She complained that the brace was too tight, uncomfortable, and made breathing difficult, so she only agreed to wear it while sleeping at night. A follow-up examination over a year later revealed that her scoliosis had increased to 71 degrees, and her posture was severely distorted. Doctors recommended surgery, believing it was the only way to correct the curvature.

Because the potential for severe complications from surgery, Christy ‘s mother searched extensively for alternative solutions that could improve her daughter’s condition without surgery. She learned about a scoliosis treatment method introduced from Germany and immediately decided to try it.

Families often overlook the need for intervention

Chiropractor Dr Cheung Yuen-kwan stated that the golden period for scoliosis improvement is usually only two to three years. However, the biggest problem is that young girls with scoliosis often don’t show any symptoms, making it easy for them and their families to overlook the urgency of intervention. Furthermore, current traditional treatments use bulky and uncomfortable braces, which young girls resist wearing, sometimes even experiencing psychological trauma.

“Parents sometimes have a soft heart, like in Christy’s case, which can lead to a rapid worsening of the curvature in a short period, with serious consequences,” Dr Cheung Yuen-kwan added. She noted that when she met Christy ‘s family, they appeared bewildered, anxious, and helpless. The examination revealed that Christy’s trunk was significantly tilted to the right, and her pelvis had shifted to the left. Bracing Reduces Scoliosis

Recent studies have found that corrective braces can reduce severe scoliosis, allowing some patients with curvatures exceeding 45 degrees to avoid surgery. The Schern-Gensing brace, an improved version of a brace developed by Dr. Schern in France, is more effective than the Boston brace. After wearing the Schern-Gensing brace for six weeks, Christy ‘s thoracic curvature decreased to 43 degrees and her trunk rotation angle decreased to 17 degrees. Although the correction process is not yet complete, the nine months of correction have already shown results, and her back is much more balanced than before.

“Fortunately, Christy had her first period in the middle of last year, which means her development has slowed down. While the risk of scoliosis worsening still exists, it has been significantly reduced,” said Dr Cheung Yuen-kwan.
